Santiago

Day 2: Valparaíso - Viña del Mar - Santiago. The picturesque layout of Valparaíso, enhanced by the surrounding hills that seem to dive into the sea, remind us that this was once the most important maritime destination on the Pacific Coast until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. The upper and lower parts of the city are connected with 16 funicular railways constructed around the turn of the century. Visitors can admire the unusual geography from another home of Pablo Neruda, La Sebastiana.

To the north is Viña del Mar, Chile's most luxurious beach resort, with mansions from the early 1900s and parks of huge trees. Lunch at Chez Gerald. See the mainland's only Easter Island moai at the Fonck Museum. After visiting the beautiful Palacio and Quinta Vergara, the Museum of Fine Arts, the beach and the 1932 Art Deco Casino, the country's first, we wend our way back to Santiago. In the Valle de Casablanca is the prominent Matitic Vineyard, where we will enjoy some of its wines. After returning to Santiago, a dinner at La Mar. Overnight in the W Santiago -- "Wonderful Room" -- King Bed.

Day 1: Santiago - Isla Negra - Pomaire - Valparaíso

Breakfast. This morning, drive toward the Pacific Ocean. On the way, visit the picturesque town of Pomaire, known as the clay capital of Chile, where you can appreciate the craftsmanship of the local people. After passing through some quaint coastal villages, arrive at Isla Negra, the house-museum of Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), one of Chile's most exceptional poets and the second to receive the Nobel Prize (1970). An avid collector, Neruda gathered many different and interesting objects during his travels. His collections of bottles and figureheads are the most impressive. Afterward, continue to Valparaíso, recently declared a World Heritage Site. Lunch at Café Turri of chef Erwan Salaün. This port town's colorful streets and picturesque houses by the sea are sure to capture the imagination of any traveller. Stay in one of the old homes on a hill overlooking the port and the ocean. A dinner of Peruvian-Italian fusion cuisine by chef Patricio Duvauchelle at Portofino. Overnight in Zerohotel -- Port View Room -- King Bed.

J The Travel Authority Review: "My overnight was spent at the amazing Hotel Zero, a house dating from 1880. Some of the nine rooms provide views of the sea but all come with alpaca blankets, Egyptian cotton sheets and work by local artists. (Despite so many sights to check out, I found it hard to leave this accommodation.) Interestingly, the name, Zero, refers to a 'back to basics' approach, which translates to the idea that the hotel should be thought of as your home. In the terraced garden lush with bougainvillea and almond trees, I sipped first a beverage blended from cherimoya and then a glass of white wine while snacking on on olives and goat cheese."

Day 2: Valparaíso - Viña del Mar - Santiago

Breakfast. The picturesque layout of Valparaíso, enhanced by the surrounding hills that seem to dive into the sea, remind us that this was once the most important maritime destination on the Pacific Coast until the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914. We will visit the downtown's Government House, Plaza Sotomayor, Plaza Victoria, Valparaíso Cathedral and the historic Port District. Afterward, we will discover the colorful hill neighborhoods. Here, high above the city, there is a fantastic agglomeration of brightly painted houses and a fantastic view over the city. The upper and lower parts of the city are connected with 16 funicular railways constructed around the turn of the century, when the Valparaíso experienced tremendous growth.

Visitors can admire the unusual geography from another home of Pablo Neruda, situated on a spectacular site on one of the many hillsides. Called La Sebastiana in honor of its builder, the architect Sebastian Collado, and described by Neruda as "a place to live and write in peace", the poet shared the house with his great friends, Francisco Velasco and Maria Martner. You can see Martner's mural made of colored stones, based on an old map of Antarctica and Patagonia, as you go up the stairs to the main part of the building. A guided tour gives a greater insight into Neruda's life and passions.

To the north along the coastline of the bay is Viña del Mar, Chile's most luxurious beach resort, with mansions from the early 1900s and parks of huge trees that gave it the well deserved name of "The Garden City". Lunch of traditional Chilean or international fusion cuisine at Chez Gerald. See the mainland's only Easter Island moai at the Fonck Museum of Archeology and History. After visiting the beautiful Palacio and Quinta Vergara, the Museum of Fine Arts, the beach and the 1932 Art Deco Casino, the country's first, we wend our way back to Santiago. In the Valle de Casablanca, one of Chile's wine regions, is the prominent Matetic Vineyards, where we will enjoy some of its wines. After returning to Santiago, a dinner at La Mar of chefs Gastón Acurio and Astrid Gutsche. Overnight in the W Santiago -- "Wonderful Room" -- King Bed.
