At around noon, on July 23, 1911, an
explorer named Hiram Bingham climbed up a steep hill and stumbled
onto Machu Picchu, uncovering what had been up until that moment,
the Incas' best kept secret. The world was stunned by his discovery.
PeruRail's luxury train service between Cuzco and Machu
Picchu is named after the American explorer who discovered the
stunning ruins of the ancient citadel.
The distinctive blue-and-gold carriages of
the Hiram Bingham are warm and inviting, with elegant interior
upholstery. The train, consisting of four luxurious passenger
cars, two dining cars, a bar car and a kitchen car, can carry
up to 84 passengers. The general style of the carriages is in
line with those on PeruRail's "Andean Explorer" train,
which operates between Cuzco and Lake Titicaca in Southern Peru,
and reflects the luxury of the 1920s Pullman era.

Weavers' Way
Land Price (4 days/3 nights)
US$ 985 per person
This short trek in the Sacred Valley
of the Incas begins at the colonial village of Lares, with its
delightful hot springs baths, and ends with a road journey to
the famous "living Inca settlement" of Ollantaytambo.
In between, we follow a hiking route that skirts the northern
slope of the Cordillera. Here, the Quechua people maintain an
ancient way of life, herding alpacas and llamas, farming the
Andean slopes and practicing a tradition inherited from their
Inca ancestors: the making and wearing of superb textiles.
This honored shaman will conduct a tribute
to Mother Earth, an ancient ceremony still observed by the indigenous
people of Peru. It consists in making an offering to Pacha Mama
(Mother Earth) so that agricultural production will improve.
To perform this activity, the materials utilized are sweet red
wine, coca leaves, firewood, chicha de jora (an alcoholic beverage
made from purple corn), red carnations, yellow carnations, white
carnations and other traditional items.
Additionally, the shaman places a typical
shawl on an altar and speaks some prayers in Quechua, asking
the Apus (mountain spirits) and Mother Earth to help the fields
produce better and more abundant crops and livestock. The altar
is burned and buried in the earth. While this is what is generally
done, the ceremony (which lasts about one and one-half hours)
can vary between one shaman and another. Other traditional rituals
are possible, if requested in advance. Among these are exorcising
witchcraft, reading coca leaves and cards to foresee a person's
future, calling a wandering soul back into its body and removing
evil winds, also called negative energy or the evil eye.

"I realized that we were witnessing
a once-in-a-lifetime experience... Not only did we see the huge
condors soaring past on their 9-foot wingspan, but two young
birds decided to land about 10 meters from us and proceeded to
perch and preen for our cameras." This private, overland
expedition sets out from the colonial city of Arequipa,
under the inspiring Misti Volcano in southern Peru.
As you pass through a remote terrain of volcanoes and
vicuñas, you note immense stone terraces of
a culture that dates back two millennia and pueblos all but
forgotten since Spanish days. At last, you reach the rim
of the Colca Canyon. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon,
it is the second deepest canyon in the world (just to the northwest
is the deepest, the Cotahuasi Canyon).

On the southern coast of Peru,
using as their canvas a plateau 37 miles long and 15 miles wide,
Nazca artists etched works of monumental proportion. They created
a montage of geometric designs and whimsical portrayals
of plants and animals; such as the hummingbird, fish,
dog, lizard, puma, spider, condor
and monkey. On this privately guided and chauffeured excursion,
an overflight of the Nazca Lines is complemented by a
visit to the regional museum's collection of vivid polychrome
ceramics and world-reknowned Paracas textiles. A boat
trip to see the amazing profusion of sea life on nearby islands
reveals some of the animals that inspired the artistic motifs.
